Inner Demons: Full of Potential
By Sydni Crass
Julia Brennan recently released her spiritually moving EP Inner Demons. The small collection of songs from the 18-year old Minneapolis singer-songwriter stands well as a first breakout from a talent whose lyrics and tone are smart, sensitive and almost perfect. With a debut album expected for the coming year, things are looking good for this aspiring new artist. The title track, “Inner Demons” is in the folk genre, and Brennan definitely reflects this perception in this song, although I would say it is a bit more Indie folk with a slight pop tune, giving off a soothing melody with catchy and repetitive lyrics. The meaning of the lyrics is connected to Indie music, though bluntly. I can see how the song got so popular, as it corresponds to the kids who don’t exactly have the best family lives and need a bit more comfort than they say. Julia Brennan most definitely has an attractive vocal tone, and puts real feeling into the lyrics. Instrumentally, the song has a rich, full background that complements the vocal track perfectly. While including great uses of the piano and stringed instruments, listeners may find great ease while hearing “Inner Demons.” Overall, the song is positively unique, original, and not overly complex. 18-year old, Julia Brennan is highly professional and creative, with a great amount of talent for a newly discovered artist. As demonstrated throughout her slightly melancholic-like song “Inner Demons,” sometimes we have to admit things are hard and ask for help.
