Posted on: August 31, 2021 2:00 pm
Congratulations to our Highlanders who were named GMC Athletes of the Week!
Noah McKee Boys' Cross Country Jr.
This summer, Noah had his best season of training so far in his career. He really dedicated himself to cross country and he is already seeing the benefits. Noah led the Highlanders for the first time in his career with a 9th place finish at the Northmont Invitational.
Jillian Yates Girls' Volleyball Sr.
During two matches this week, Jillian collected 39 kills, 8 blocks and 3 serving aces. She has been the hammer for the team this year. Jillian carries a 4.0 GPA and is involved in National Honors Society, Spanish Club, Spanish Honor Society, and competes in Track and Field. Her dream goal is to work with a Non-Profit organization.
Ian Schaefer Football Sr.
In our week two game vs. defending state champion Coldwater Ian had 4 solo tackles, 3 assisted tackles, 2 pass breakups, and an interception that he returned for 35 yards. Ian continues to be a standout in our secondary and is one of the top corners in the GMC. In addition to his football talents, Ian is also a standout on the baseball team.
Debra Grogan Girls' Golf Soph
Debra is a phenomenal golfer & we are so lucky to have her as a Highlander! She has been a match or tournament medalist in 4 of our 7 contests this season. She is averaging par and is currently ranked #3 in the GMC - with less than 1 stroke difference between her and 1st place. She had 6 birdies in the Sycamore Invitational and earned top women's golfer in the Cincinnati Enquirer's poll last week. All of this is secondary to her earning a 4.0 in her full Honors and AP schedule.
Carly Shippett Girls' Soccer Sr
Carly, a senior captain, earned her 2nd shutout of the season as the Highlander's Goalkeeper this past week. Carly has helped her team win their 1st two games of the season, with two shutouts, which hasn't happened since before the 2003 season.
Avery King Girls' Cross Tennis Jr
Junior, Avery King, went 4-0 this past week with three wins at singles and a win at doubles. Avery defeated Walnut Hills, Hamilton, Turpin, and Fairfield en route to her perfect week. Avery is currently 8-3 on the season. In addition to tennis, Avery is a member of NHS, a class officer, on student council, and a member of the bowling team. Avery carries a 4.0 GPA and after high school, she would like to go to college to pursue a career in health care, business, or real estate.
Caitlynn Wunderlich Girls' Cross Country Soph
Caitlyn had an amazing race this past weekend at the Northmont Invitational. She placed as the team's number 5 runner, ran a personal best time by 37 seconds, had an incredible kick the last 200 meters to pass four competitors, and she helped her team to a 2nd place finish. Caitlyn works hard not only at practice but also in the classroom, she has a 4.0 GPA.
