Posted on: September 1, 2020 1:20 pm
Congratulations to our Highlanders who were named GMC Athletes of the Week!
Steve Watson Football Sr.
In the Friday night game vs. Milford, Steve had 13 rushes for 69 yards with a rushing TD. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry and had a receiving TD.
Erykah Cornett Girls' Soccer Soph.
Erykah, a Sophomore Forward for the Highlanders, netted two goals against Seton and had 2 assists against Turpin this past week. Against Seton, she scored her first career varsity goal, and has helped her team get out to a fast start this season offensively with her aggressive, attacking style of play. Erykah is a multi-sport athlete for Oak Hills as she was on the Varsity Basketball team as well.
James Schmidt Boys' Cross Country Sr. On a day when almost everyone had trouble performing to their ability level, James made sure to leave all excuses at home. In the first meet of his senior season, which promises to be one worthy of legend, he finished runner-up with a time that ranks him 5th in the state after week 1.
Avery King Girls' Tennis Soph
Avery has been very consistent at first doubles for the team this year. She has opened the season with a 4-2 record with her partner Molli Malone at first doubles. In addition to tennis, Avery is also a member of the bowling team and a class officer. Avery carries a 4.0 GPA and plans to major in pre-med in college.
Owen Parker Boys' Soccer Sr
With the game tied 0-0 late in the game against LaSalle, Oak Hills goalkeeper Owen Parker made a spectacular save off a LaSalle free-kick to preserve the tie. Owen is a three-year varsity soccer athlete and was 2nd team All-GMC in his junior year. He is undecided where he will be attending college, but plans to major in environmental science and would love to play soccer.
Devin Fitzgibbon Boys' Soccer Sr.
With less than two minutes left in Oak Hills game against Kings and down by a goal, Fitz stepped up to take a free-kick from about 35 yards out along the right sideline. He bent the ball towards the far post and hit the upper corner, tying the game 3-3. Fitz is a 4-year varsity soccer player and a multisport athlete and also competes in Track and Field. He is a member of the NHS and has a 4.0 GPA. He has been involved in leadership conferences as well. He wants to continue to play soccer in college while majoring in sports management.
Alyssa Hammond Girls Cross Country Soph
Alyssa helped her team win the Talawanda Invitational this past weekend by placing 2nd overall in the race. Alyssa’s time of 19:49 is currently ranked #2 in the GMC.
