OHLSD students participate in CCHMC study on tourniquets

Over 322 students from Oak Hills Local School District, specifically Springmyer Elementary and Bridgetown Middle School, recently participated in a study to determine whether children aged 8 to 12 years can recognize when and how to use a combat application tourniquet (CAT) and correctly apply it to achieve hemorrhage control. The results recently published in the medical journal JACEP Open.

The study concluded that children as young as 8 years old can successfully learn hemorrhage control techniques and apply a tourniquet, suggesting that this training can begin as early as third grade.
The study was conducted by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center with assistance by Green Township EMS personnel and Child Life professionals from Cincinnati Children’s providing additional first aid training for the students.
