Oak Hills teacher to be part of two national summer institutes Nationally board certified teacher, Sherry Middendorf-Fuller from C.O.Harrison Elementary School, will be traveling to New Mexico as part of the Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History teacher seminar to study “American Indians and the American Southwest” with nationally known scholar Elliott West. She will be one of thirty educators from across many grade levels, subject areas and geographic regions selected to attend the week long seminar on the campus of the Institute of American Indian Arts located in Santa Fe. The selection committee looked for applicants who ”demonstrate a strong interest in American history, a commitment to growth and progress in the profession, and an ability to translate new knowledge and materials into effective classroom teaching.” From there she will travel to Montana to take part in a National Endowment for the Humanities Landmark Workshop. “I look at these learning opportunities as a way for me to deepen my understanding of American history and make it come alive for my students.”

Fuller, who is an Oak Hills graduate and resident, has participated in three other NEH sponsored workshops. This year she will join 30 other educators from across the country to study: The Richest Hills- Mining in the Far West, 1860-1920. During the 5 ½ days, teachers will travel to four major mining sites in Montana’s Southwest region. In route to each destination, historical scholars from across the country will join the group to discuss the historic significance of each mining town. Educators will see and experience first-hand what life was like and what remains of these once booming environs. Fuller applied to this particular workshop because “I have never been to this part of the country and the itinerary of being on the go…traveling each day to a different locality sounded like an amazing field trip!” She hopes to develop a series of lessons that will not only address mining and its impact on America but also the development of architecture and women’s roles. She was grateful for the letter of support she received from Mr. Corey Kessler her principal when she applied for the workshop in late January.

“As one of the visual arts specialists at my school, I am always striving to connect my lessons to a larger cultural picture. Given the opportunity to participate in these workshops, visit a great number of historic sites, gain knowledge and resources from the panel of experts will help me illustrate and interpret these significant pieces of frontier history for my students.” In Oak Hills we are striving to provide our students with a sense of the global community. Fuller believes that this understanding must start with foundational knowledge of our American heritage. As an educator, she” hopes to foster a greater sense of what made America great with the intent of inspiring future generations.”

This year we raised $7,163.00 which helped district families who experienced tragic situations. Every school joined the competition and a big congratulations to Delhi Middle School for winning the competition.

Thanks again to all those who participated.

Congratulations to all of the Gray and Tate Scholarship winners as well as our Distinguished Alumni, Dr. Joel P. Reginelli ’86 and Diane Weidner ‘85, Distinguished Staff, Kim Dobbs ’74...

Congratulations to all of the Gray and Tate Scholarship winners as well as our Distinguished Alumni, Dr. Joel P. Reginelli ’86 and Diane Weidner ‘85, Distinguished Staff, Kim Dobbs ’74 and Hall of Honor Award Winner, Jan Wilking ’89. It was such a delight to come together and support their many accomplishments. For the fifteenth year in a row the Western Hills Country Club has hosted another memorable night celebrating the success of many honorable people. This year’s turnout was phenomenal, with the largest attendance to date. The Oak Hills Alumni & Education Foundation is proud to provide the grants to teachers wanting to make big changes in the way students learn outside the classroom.

“This year’s dinner was an overwhelming success,” Cheryl Sieve, Chairman of the Foundation, said. “It displayed the support and gratitude our Alumni and Community have for the teachers and students of the Oak Hills Local School Distirct!”

The Foundation accommodated and entertained the guests in full Highlander spirit with a warm welcome by Bagpiper Bill. After hearing touching acceptance speeches from each award winner the crowd left with a greater understanding for why each was chosen as well as their appreciation for their Oak Hills education. The speeches can be viewed online on the Official Page of the Oak Hills Alumni Association Facebook page, www.facebook.com/OHHSAlumni.

“We were pleased to host our largest crowd ever for the Foundation dinner this year. This yearly event provides a great opportunity to showcase the work of our teachers and students and highlight the contributions of the Foundation to our schools and our community. It’s wonderful to have our distinguished alumni and staff recognized and their speeches were outstanding,” Emily C. Buckley, Coordinator of Development for Oak Hills, said.

If you would like to further support the students and staff of the Oak Hills Local School District please make donations to the Oak Hills Alumni & Education Foundation at 6325 Rapid Run Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45233. For more information about the Oak Hills Alumni & Educational Foundation please visit http://oakhillsalumniassociation.com/.

Emily Amlin said she knew she wanted to be a teacher when she was a senior in high school.

The C.O. Harrison Elementary School teacher said she volunteered at youth camps when she was a teenager and the experience helped her realize she wanted a career in which she could impact the lives of children.

“I enjoy working with kids,” Amlin said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with kids.”

Her passion for education earned her recognition as one of Cincinnati Christian University’s top 10 Teachers of Excellence.

The East Price Hill college hosted its first ever Teachers of Excellence awards ceremony Thursday, honoring 10 of the finest teachers in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The university chose the winners based on nominations it received from administrators and principals at public and parochial schools throughout the region.

Cincinnati Christian University President David Faust said the they’ve wanted to host a banquet honoring teachers for quite some time. The university has recognized area police officers and firefighters each fall for the past eight years.

“It’s very important for us at CCU to encourage people in our community,” Faust said.

“Some of the people who have the most significant impact on our communities are the teachers who are working with our children and families on a day-to-day basis. We want to honor them and recognize them.”

Amlin, who teaches fourth-grade, said she was surprised when she learned she was named one of the Teachers of Excellence, but it was also exciting.

“I was honored someone thought enough of me to take the time to nominate me,” she said.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, she earned her degree in elementary education from Anderson University in Indiana. She also has a master’s degree in administration from Xavier University.

“I always enjoyed school and I always enjoyed learning,” she said.

“I also like to be a leader, and I think all of those characteristics lend themselves to a career in the classroom.”

Amlin has spent her entire 14-year teaching career with the Oak Hills Local School District, and she said she’s blessed to be able to work with a great team of educators at C.O. Harrison.

“There’s no way I could find anything this fabulous anywhere else,” she said.

Corey Kessler, principal at C.O. Harrison, said Amlin has demonstrated a passion for, and leadership in, guiding students toward learning basic principles to guide their intellectual and social development.

“Her focus on the whole child has had a positive impact on our school community,” Kessler said.

“As a staff, we are very proud of Ms. Amlin and her contributions to the growth and development of our students – she is very deserving of this special recognition.”

Amlin, who is the mother of three adopted children and one foster child, said there are many teachers who deserve recognition, and she hopes she was honored for her dedication to service and for making a difference in children’s lives.

“I love the kids in my class just like they’re my own kids,” she said.
