Over the summer, nine middle school students from Bridgetown, Delhi, and Rapid Run Middle Schools participated in a speed reading course lead by Ms. Bonnie James, President and Founder of Advanced Reading Concepts. The experience for the students was astounding!
According to Ms. James, “The ending speeds for the students were among the highest we’ve ever had at an average of 4,288 words per minute! That is 3,992 words per minute higher than their average beginning speed of 296 words per minute.” Not only did the students’ words per minute increase but also their comprehension — from 58 percent comprehension of text to 86 percent comprehension of text!
“We are excited about these initial results for our students and will continue to monitor their use and development of this skill over the course of the school year,” said Tim Cybulski, District Curriculum & Instruction Director. In addition, analysis of the final results from these students who participated in this pilot group–taken at the end of the school year–will guide future decisions about expanding the offering of this program to more students across the school district.
