C.O. Harrison Elementary School fourth and fifth graders performed their first 7 Habits assembly on Friday, September 21. The students performed for their classmates twice during
the day, as well as for parents and grandparents at the PTA Family Night that evening.
Emily Amlin, who heads up the 7 Habits Drama Club with Julie Lengerich, draws inspiration from Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which is a children’s version of his father, Stephen Covey’s, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
“The reason I do the 7 Habits Drama club comes from a quote by Stephen Covey,” said Amlin. ‘”We only get one chance to prepare our students for a future that none of us can predict. What are we going to do with that one chance?’”
According to Amlin, her students learned how to use these 7 Habits at school and at home in order to become more successful and happier students.
The seven habits the students learned include:
Be Proactive
Begin with the end in mind
Put first things first
Think win, win
Seek first to understand and then to be understood
Synergize
Sharpen the saw
“We do this because kids love assemblies, they do better in school and in life if they can practice and use the 7 habits,” she said. “The fourth and fifth graders in drama club love to dance and sing,” Amlin
said.
